There has been a lot happening as of late in the world of astronomy and in this edition we will cover only a small fraction of those goings on, but none the less, we still have some very exciting news to report to all you space fans out there trekking your way across cyber-world. Recent findings strongly suggest the presence of liquid salt water on Mars, it appears we are in a deep solar minimum, a new technique is uncovering exoplanets in old Hubble archival data, and results from the Spitzer space telescope show that some chemicals thought to be necessary for life (as we know it) may not be present around all stars. So lets jump into it shall we.....

We have, as always, some very exciting news for you from the wire and in this edition there is a certain theme, that of imaged exo-planets. There have been some amazing discoveries yielded by impressive research into the final frontier including the first visible light image taken of an extra-solar planet, the first image of a multi planet system and another imaging of an exo-planet that is at about the same distance from its star as Saturn is from ours, which is yet another first. As well a team of researchers have discovered that super-massive black holes act like a throbbing heart at the core of galaxies. As well we will take a look at some strange auroral properties on our gigantic neighbor Saturn.

It’s been a little while since our last news dispatch and in the interim there has been a lot of really exciting and surprising news coming down off the wire. This edition we will cover Spitzer’s amazing look into the ever stranger comet Holmes, research is showing that massive black holes were common in the early cosmos and astronomers have discovered asteroid belts and hints of unseen planets in one of our closet neighbors, Epsilon Eridani. In addition studies are showing that young terrestrial planets stay hotter for much longer than previously thought and the deepest ground based ultra-violet image has been taken, showing a stunning sea of far off galaxies. So without further ado…….

In light of the events of the past few weeks in this region of the country we have been somewhat behind the curve of events and news going on in the world of astronomy and space science. But things have settled from the aftermath of hurricane Ike and we have a few late editions to the September newsletter. Astronomers have found something they are calling a “dark flow” that may indicate things beyond the observable universe, astronomers were able to observe an extra-solar system that they believe harbored a colossal planetary collision, and solar energy output is declining and currently at a fifty year low and an announcement of a talk that is on space weather…..so lets get into it.

It has been a while since our last astronomy news update and many a discovery has been made in interim. Of course there is an update on the Phoenix

Lander that is revealing ever more mysteries on the Martian surface and bringing never before images of Martian clouds. As well new studies put an upper limit on the size of black holes, research has shown that all the dwarf galaxies around our own Milky Way appear to have the same mass (regardless of luminosity), a new minor-planet has been found inside the orbit of Neptune, the SDSS survey has discovered that there appears to be no dark matter in the cosmic voids found in the large scale structure of the Universe, and a recent Hubble image has shed some light on extra-galactic magnetic fields. All that and a little more in this edition of the cosmic wire…..
