The Cosmic Wire

September Astronomy News PDF Print E-mail

It has been a while since our last astronomy news update and many a discovery has been made in interim. Of course there is an update on the Phoenix Lander that is revealing ever more mysteries on the Martian surface and bringing never before images of Martian clouds. As well new studies put an upper limit on the size of black holes, research has shown that all the dwarf galaxies around our own Milky Way appear to have the same mass (regardless of luminosity), a new minor-planet has been found inside the orbit of Neptune, the SDSS survey has discovered that there appears to be no dark matter in the cosmic voids found in the large scale structure of the Universe, and a recent Hubble image has shed some light on extra-galactic magnetic fields. All that and a little more in this edition of the cosmic wire…..

Well space fans yet again we have some more news coming down of the cosmic wire. This edition we have another phoenix update discussing the milestone achievement of identifying water in a soil sample delivered to one of its on board instruments, new research using a fleet of NASA spacecraft have lifted some of the mystery behind the enigmatic and spectacular aurora, and data gathered from TITAN, a moon of Saturn has confirmed liquid on its surface as well as electrical activity in its atmosphere. So let’s get into it shall we……..

Mars has gotten a lot of attention as of late and no doubt it has something to due with the incredible amount of high technology we have on and orbiting the planet. The Phoenix Mission has found water ice on Mars and has done some milestone experiments on Martian soil, with never before known data coming down off the wire. As well new research is saying that Mars may once have had dew and it also probably suffered a major, and I mean really major, impact in its history that left the largest crater known in the solar system. Also research has found nucleobases used in RNA in meteorite fragments and scientists looking into dark matter say that it might greatly affect stars life spans.

Well once again we have some very interesting and exciting news to report from the world of astronomy. There have been some major discoveries over the last few weeks, including Cassini’s surprising data from its encounter with one of Saturn’s moons, the discovery of a new and very curios type of star system, the images captured of a solar tsunami, the smallest exoplanet found thus far and new images of one of the moons of Mars…….

New Spectral Class Dwarf, Charged Moon and More... PDF Print E-mail
Written by Nathaniel Whitehead
This edition we have news of some interesting insights coming through the wire. A knew type of spectral class of dwarf might have been identified, bombardment of electrons from the Earth’s magnetotail does strange things to the moon, observations of globular clusters indicate that they may be still developing, there is evidence for geologically recent glacial activity on Mars and incredible pictures of interacting galaxies taken by the Hubble space telescope have been released.
